Matheran is the smallest hill station in India and the only pedestrian hill station in Asia. Located 90 km from Mumbai, it provides welcome respite from the heat and grime of Mumbai. Spread over an area of 8 sq. km, Matheran’s USP is that motor vehicles are banned in its town limits. This tiny place is full of lush green forests and offer breathtaking views of the plains below. The remnants of British influence are still very much evident in Matheran in its Parsi bungalows and British-style architecture homes. Since Matheran is close to Mumbai and yet far from crowds and offers a completely unique experience, it is a very popular honeymoon destination among Mumbaikars.
Things to do on a Honeymoon in Matheran
The journey to Matheran itself is one of highlights of the whole experience. Since vehicles are banned you can either reach there by toy train which goes straight up to Matheran, take a horseback ride, go in hand-pulled carts, or simply trek from Neral, the nearest rail head. The town is a walker’s delight and its wonderfully fresh air is nectar for lungs. When you have come to Matheran, you must be ready to give your feet some exercise. There are plenty of treks and scenic look out points in Matheran.
The trek to Panorama Point is an exhilarating experience during the monsoons and winters. The point offers panoramic views of Neral town and on a clear day you can see as far as Mumbai. The place also offers wonderful views of sunrises and sunsets. The trek to Hart Point and Monkey Point passes through dense forests and is a delight for the birdwatchers. Porcupine Point is famous for its breathtaking sunsets, while Louisa Point offers unhindered views of Prabal Fort and lush green hills. One Tree Hill Point – true to its name has only one tree – is truly magical during the rainy season. From here you can take the footpath to Shivaji’s Ladder, which is believed to have been frequently used by the legendary Maratha warrior Shivaji for his hunting and pleasure trips to this region. Another highlight of Matheran is Charlotte Lake, which has the Pisharnath Mahadev Temple at one of its ends.
